Fear of the Lord

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

fear_lord“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Proverbs 8:13

The Book of Proverbs gives us a good explanation of what the “fear of the Lord” is. Some people are confused when they read this verse in the Old Testament and then, in the New Testament they read this verse:

1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

To understand and reconcile these two verses, we must understand what it means to “fear the Lord.” The Hebrew word used here in Proverbs has the meaning of “reverencing the Lord.” It means to be reverent, with humility toward God, because we acknowledge His great power and authority. An example of this would be the same sort of reverence we should have toward our parents. We should respect what our parents say to us. If our father warns us of the danger of drinking or smoking, we will not go against what he tells us, if we respect his words. We will fear the consequences of what could happen to us should we become addicted to these drugs. This is a healthy fear that keeps us from harm. It is not a tormenting fear. If we have the fear or respect of God’s Words, we will not go against them. Instead, we will apply His Words to our lives. We will stay away from the things that the Bible warns us are dangerous to our souls.

Whom Shall I Fear?

Burning_BushOften times we fear that which we hate or abhor, why should we fear God though? Aren’t we supposed to love Him and shouldn’t He be our friend who we can come to in Times of trouble and fear?

Psalm 2:11
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

The fire licked up the outside walls and cascaded up into the night. All around the building, fire fighters scampered, trundling huge hoses into position to battle the blaze. Jerry stood with sweat pouring down his face and the spray from the hose soaking his body. He loved his work and felt he really served well. He knew the dangers that were involved, but he fought fires anyway. His job was one of the greatest joys of his life.

Not all things that inspire fear should be avoided.
firefighter460A wise person knows his limits and knows what situations he can handle and what ones he cannot. A little fear is healthy. It gives us respect and appreciation. It causes us to not get careless. The Fear of the Lord should not drive us from Him, but should help us to understand Him and deal with Him reverently and respectfully. When we encounter our Lord with both joy and trembling, we know Him in a special and meaningful way.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to never forget Your awesome power, as well as Your awesome love. Allow me to feel a healthy fear, but never let that fear separate me from You. Amen.

Caller ID

K630i_QuickBlack_Man_Holding_Phone_On a Saturday night several weeks ago, a pastor was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home.
It was about 10 pm, but his wife didn’t answer the phone.
The pastor let it ring many times.
He thought it was odd that she didn’t answer, but…

decided to wrap up a few things and try again in a few minutes. When he tried again she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn’t answered before, and she said that it hadn’t rung at their house.

They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he’d used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he’d called on Saturday night. The pastor couldn’t figure out what the man was talking about.

Then the man said, ” It rang and rang, but I didn’t answer.” The pastor remembered the mishap and apologized for the disturbing him, explaining that he’d intended to call his wife.
The man said, “That’s ok. Let me tell you my story. You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, ‘God if you’re there, and you don’t want me to do this, give me a sign now.”

At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, ‘Almighty God’. I was afraid to answer!

The reason why it showed on the man’s caller ID that the call came form “Almighty God” is because the church that the pastor attends is called Almighty God Tabernacle!!!

We may be the only Bible

traffic_lightsYou might of heard this somewhere before…
But read it anyway

“We May be the Only Bible”

I was sitting at a stop light this morning. The lady in front of me was going through papers on the seat of her car, and when the light changed to green she did not obey its command – a green light is a commandment – NOT a suggestion.

When the light turned to red, and she had still not moved, I began (with my windows up) screaming epithets and beating on my steering wheel. My expressions of distress were interrupted by a policeman, gun drawn, tapping on my window. Against my protestations of, ‘You can’t arrest me for hollering in my car,’ he ordered me into the back seat of his.

christian car-noAfter about two hours in a holding cell, the arresting officer advised me I was free to go. I said, ‘I knew you couldn’t arrest me for what I was yelling in my own car. You haven’t heard the last of this.’

The officer replied, ‘I didn’t arrest you for shouting in your car. I was directly behind you at the light. I saw you screaming and beating your steering wheel, and I said to myself, ‘What a jerk. But there is nothing I can do to him for throwing a fit in his own car. Then I noticed the ‘Cross’ hanging from your rear view mirror, the bright yellow ‘Choose Life’ license tag, the ‘Jesus is Coming Soon’ bumper sticker, and the Fish symbol, and I thought you must have stolen the car.’
…and we may be the only Bible some people ever read…….
