On the occasion of the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa, on 6 July 2011, PyeongChang was selected as the host city of the 23rd Olympic Winter Games and the 12th Paralympic Winter Games. This remarkable achievement capped a decade of dreams and disappointment from two successive failed bids for the 2010 and 2014 Games.
